Narrative Essay
A Slave to War
Long ago, before the time of the Qin Dynasty there lived a 15 year boy named Lee. He was a strapping young lad, with wavy black hair and sparkling brown eyes. He had a strong, muscular build from working in the fields, since he turned 10. He lived in a small village along the majestic Yangtze River, with his sick mother. He had worked as a farmhand ever since his father died fighting in the Warring States, so he could pay for his mother’s medicine.
Three months later, his mother passed away from pneumonia. Filled to the brim with grief, he sold their old house and decided to move away. As he was walking down a road in autumn, two clocked figures appeared from over the hill. One of the men drew a sword and said, “Put your hands behind your back, or else.” Lee did what the shadowy man said and did not try to struggle. The other man put a sack over his head and was put into a cart. Lee drifted into slumber, scared of what might happen to him next.
When Lee woke up, he was in a large cell with about 5 other boys. From out of the shadows a man came into view. The man spoke in a smooth and clear tone, “Hello my children. I am Zhou Yu, lieutenant in King Qin Shi Huang’s Army. You are probably wondering why you are here.” One of the boys, about 18, shouted “What do you want with us? We are free men you have no right to keep us locked up like this. I demand you release us!” Lieutenant Yu replied with a devilish tone, “You will be released, once your service to me is over.” In a scared tone Lee asked, “What kind of service to you require?” One of the guardsman answered “You will become a solider in the Imperial Army, and you will like it!” Accepting their fate the young men went to Xinyang to complete their military training.
